Rafting Instructions

Rafting Instructions
Camp One Step Boat Day

CAPTAINS! YOUR BOAT and YOUR CREW are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! :o)
• If you and your crew are not adequately skilled in rafting, a qualified helper will be assigned to your boat if one is available. Contact a Crew At The Helm Boat Day board member for help before you leave the morning meeting.
• If you are not fully prepared to raft when your turn comes, you will be waived off.
• We will monitor VHF Channel 68 the entire day. Water Safety/Police are on Channel 16!

BEFORE APPROACHING THE RAFT LINE
• Boaters who have indicated they are able to drop an anchor, please place an orange life vest on the bow or windshield of the boat as you approach the raft so we can identify you.
• Have 4 LINES attached to the cleats on the four corners of your vessel, untangled and ready for use. Two longer lines measuring at least the length of you boat should be on both sides of the bow (front), and two shorter lines (minimum 10’) should be on both sides of the stern (back).
• Tie down 4 fenders to your vessel, 2 on each side, one a bit higher than mid ship, one at the stern. These protect your boat from being damaged by the boat you are rafted to.
• Have a qualified crewmember at the bow and stern, ready to toss your line or catch a line from the boat you will raft next to. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THESE LINES ARE KNOT AND TANGLE FREE!

THE RAFTING PROCESS
• There will be rafting crew in neon shirts and hats clearly marked “CREW” on each side of center as the raft is being constructed. The RAFT CREW will be THE ONLY INDIVIDUALS you are to take direction from!
• Boats will be rafted from the center outward, according to size.
• Captains are to wait in line in front of the raft, keeping a safe distance from other vessels, till the RAFT CREW calls their boat in. They will do this by waving you in with flags, so be alert.
• If a bow anchor needs to be thrown by you, a member of the RAFT CREW will notify you. If you are unwilling or unable to throw an anchor, let the RAFT CREW know by waiving your arms back and forth, and /or by announcing such on your VHF radio.
• Once you are in position by the raft, you will be instructed to TURN OFF your engine(s). TURN OFF ENGINES IMMEDIATELY.
• The Captain and crew are responsible for tying off the boat – do NOT expect the RAFT CREW to do this for you!
• As a courtesy to the RAFT CREW, have a designated member of your party at the stern of the boat with bottled water to toss to the RAFT CREW if necessary.

DISSASSEMBLING THE RAFT
• At approximately 4:30 p.m. the RAFT CREW will instruct boats to begin to peel off from each end,
one boat at a time. Turn your blowers on, but do NOT start your engine(s) till the RAFT CREW
tells you to. The RAFT CREW will tell you when it is safe to start your engines.
• Do NOT start generators till after you leave the raft. These fumes are hazardous to the RAFT CREW.

Thank you for keeping Boat Day accident free by following these instructions!

Thursday July 20th, 2023

HOST INFORMATION SHEET

Thank you for volunteering your time and resources to help host this wonderful day for some very special children! The following is information you’ll need to know:

• Gifts for the campers have been donated or purchased with funds donated by Abbey Marina members and a host of corporate and individual supporters of COS Boat Day

• The barbecue at the Harbor House is provided by the Abbey Harbor Condo Association (AHCA). All campers, counselors, boaters and crew are invited to this event. Please let the campers eat first! Please thank your AHCA Board!

• Provisions: Water, cookies, candies, and other goodies which will be given to each boat participating. These will be distributed in the harbor house beginning at 10am on the day of the event, and then after the 11am morning meeting. Back up supplies are always good precautions, but normally not necessary. Boaters may stock their own supplies if they so desire.

• Ice is available at the Harbor House free of charge and should be picked up after the morning meeting, compliments of the AHCA.

• Each boat will be assigned at minimum one counselor to help keep track of the campers and attend to any special needs that they may have.

• Life jackets are mandatory for all campers and must be worn if the kids are in the water. Please take inventory the week before. If you are short life jackets, we suggest borrowing some spares from a boat neighbor who will not be participating in Boat Day.

• Boaters must keep their campers either on their boat (if not rafting) or with the rest of the group at Big Foot Beach. NO exceptions.

• Bring along adequate line for rafting and anchoring. Stay within your boat handling capabilities! Plan ahead! Put your bumpers out BEFORE it’s your turn to raft!

• Feel free to bring along extra boat helpers to assist in entertaining, anchoring, etc. Please let one of the Boat Day Committee members know if you are in need of additional help on your boat. If we have unassigned crew available to serve as a boat helper, we will assign one to you.

• Refrain from USING or SERVING alcoholic beverages during the time your campers are on board. You are invited to catch up later at the After Party, held for all volunteers after the campers leave, courtesy of the Boat Day Committee.

• We will monitor VHF Channel 68 the entire day. If you wish to reach someone, hail on Channel 68 and then switch to 69, 71 or 72 for general conversation. Water Safety Patrol and Police Boats will monitor Channel 16.

On behalf of Camp One Step by Children’s Oncology Services– a great big THANK YOU for participating!
